What ever happend to Age of Empires 3?

It seemed to be going well, but then expansions stopped coming out, and then i looked into it and apparently Ensemble Studios went broke? can someone please confirm that that's the reason, and secondly, does anyone know if other companies are trying to develop more age of empires? i know microsoft are bringing out age of empires online...anything else?
